The Power of One: What Can We Learn From Singe Molecule Fluorescence Microscopy Measurements?

Title: The Power of One: What Can We Learn From Singe Molecule Fluorescence Microscopy Measurements? Time: 9:00 am, Nov. 23, 2017 (Thursday) Venue: Room W563, Physics building, Peking University Speaker: Prof. Johan Hofkens 趙清 zhaoqing@pku.edu.cn Abstract: Single molecule spectroscopy has tremendously impacted every field, ranging from catalysis over plasmonics, polymer physics, biophysics to cell biology and DNA sequencing. Furthermore, single molecule techniques have allowed researchers to push the resolution of fluorescence microscopy past the diffraction limit. I will give an overview of recent single molecule experiments in my laboratory. Progress in instrumentation, in polymer research (1), in plasmonics (2), in emissive silver clusters (3), in perovskite nano-particle research (4) and in DNA mapping (5) will be discussed. About the speaker: Prof. Johan Hofkens received his Ph.D. at science, KU Leuven in 1993. Then he did postdoctoral research at Osaka University from 1994 to 1995, at KU Leuven from 1995 to 2002. In 2005, he became a full professor at KU Leuven. His main research is related to development of single molecule spectroscopy/high resolution fluorescence microscopy modalities and its application to timely topics at the boundaries of biology, chemistry and physics.
